i love ghost in the shell... the scarlet johansen movie was terrible...
GITS is genius because the major was fully mechanized as a young child for like medical reasons, so her brain is like a computer.. she never really had normal flesh limbs and stuff, or normal eyes, taste, etc. so her brain is not like a normal human brain, it's just like a processor... cos it's always been linked to computers and tech; sensors, not nerves.
then at the same time you have the AI, the laughing man, that has become sentient. so you have a human that has become a computer, vs a computer that has become human. then from that is gets all existential and stuff. cos it's based on deus ex machina - "god from the machine". or ghost from the machine, or soul from the machine; referring to the AI.
but the beauty of it, is that deus ex machina, is an ooold saying, and it actually refers to human consciousness. the god that arises from the machine, is you.
