50 years ago, anti-war rallies began forming on the campus of Kent State University in Ohio. Soon the National Guard was called in—and on May 4, 1970, four students were dead.

May Day—otherwise known as International Workers’ Day. The connection between May 1 and labor rights began in the United States, at the height of the industrial revolution.

President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act on this day in 1830, setting the stage for the Trail of Tears.
